The Incredible Benefits of Sensible Sun Exposure

Being outdoors is typical for the strongest and longest living cultures. When working the land, they are naturally exposed to the sun. Find out how your indoor lifestyle is preventing the benefits of sensible sun exposure.

In today’s society, with the depletion of the ozone layer, it is suggested to limit sun exposure during peak times. However, when the body is exposed to the sun on a regular basis it produces Vitamin D which helps aid the utilization of calcium which promotes stronger bones and a healthier body.

The Benefits of Sun Exposure

Sensible sun exposure has been known to reduce the resting heart rate, lower blood sugar, strengthen the immune system, increase cardiac output, lower blood pressure, balance the production of hormones, and lower stress levels.

Vitamin D is more of a hormone than a vitamin. To optimize the use of vitamin D, the body needs to be supplied with essential fats.

Without vitamin D the body is unable to process minerals. Every hormone in our body along with our immune system is dependent on vitamin D. Rickets, a vitamin D deficiency, often takes place in polluted cities with skyscrapers that prevent sunshine from coming in contact with the skin. Vitamin D deficiency is also associated with heart disease and osteoporosis.

Sensible exposure to the sun can help aid in preventing a Vitamin D deficiency. For those who live close to the equator, fifteen minutes a day of sun exposure is an adequate amount of time in order to receive the necessary daily dose of vitamin D.

How Much Sun Exposure Should You Get?

As you get further from the equator, your daily dose of sun exposure should increase. For example, when living in the northeast, 40 minutes to 2 hours of daily sun exposure is sufficient depending on your skin type and ability to be consistent with exposure. A mild glow of pink without any pain is usually considered plenty.
